Upper Nile Governor declares calm in Malakal
The Governor of Upper Nile State announced that the security situation in Malakal town has returned to normal after recent high tensions.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Malakal, Governor James Odhok Oyai stated that the area is now calm following a semi-tribal incident that began on May 30th.
“The events began on May 30th with the killing of four individuals from the Shilluk tribe in the Boud area of Fashoda District by criminals,” said Governor Odhok. “The criminals are suspected to have come from Akoka County.”
Governor Odhok reported that some young men from the POC (Protection of Civilians) camp killed a Dinka driver who had no connection to the earlier incident. “This man was our driver at the state secretariat,” Odhok added.
He thanked the state government for their efforts to contain the situation. “This is a national responsibility that we all share,” he stated.
The governor called on government members to work together as a unified national government for the benefit of Upper Nile and South Sudan as a whole. He vowed to apprehend anyone involved in the incident and ensure they face the law.
