President Kiir Announces Findings of a Wildlife Census
Juba, Tuesday (June 25, 2024) – H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed the government’s commitment to transforming the wildlife and tourism sectors in order to meet the current international benchmarks.
President Kiir was speaking while unveiling the staggering results of a wildlife migration census, catapulting the country to the forefront as the world’s largest mammal migration destination. The wildlife migration census was conducted at Badingilo Park, Boma Park, and Jonglei Landscape.
In light of these findings, President Kiir directed security forces to take decisive action against poaching and the trafficking of wildlife products within the country and across its borders.
As South Sudan strives to elevate its status as a premier wildlife destination, Kiir’s commitment to enhancing conservation efforts and promoting responsible tourism practices sets a positive tone for the country’s future.
Based on the results of the census, the African Parks Network says South Sudan is now considered the largest mammal migration in the world, surpassing even the famous Serengeti migration in Tanzania. This is a testament to the country’s rich biodiversity and the importance of protecting its natural habitats.
