Fresh Violence Outbreak in Malakal

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said that it is deeply concerned about the outbreak of violence in Malakal, Upper Nile state, which led to the deaths of several people On Thursday May 30, 2024.

The UN Mission (UNMISS) said tensions also remain high in the UN Protection of Civilians Site adjacent to the Mission’s base in the state.

“Such violence causes lasting harm to communities and also prevents UNMISS from continuing our vital protection and peacebuilding work,” cautioned Nicholas Haysom, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Head of the UN Peacekeeping mission.

UNMISS urged state and local authorities as well as government security forces to maintain stability and order in the area, including around the UN Protection of Civilians Site and Malakal town.

It called on feuding parties to show restraint and use dialogue to resolve outstanding issues peacefully.

The Mission says it is continuing to work with the state government, community leaders, and security actors to ensure calm prevails.

 President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday met with Governor Riek Biem Top of Unity State to discuss a range of issues, including political unrest, cattle rustling, a lack of law and order, and the need to restore peace and stability there.
President Kiir instructed the recently appointed governor to establish peace and unity among the communities in the Unity State.
Governor Riek stated that the September 2018 peace deal is still in place and reiterated his commitment to tackling communal violence in order to keep the state peaceful.
