Gen. Pagan Amum has Condemned the Shooting in Juba
Pagan Amum, the Opposition Leader and a member of a holdout group based in Kenya, has condemned the shooting that occurred on Thursday evening at the residence of the Former Spy Chief, General Akol Koor Kuch in Thongpiny. The shooting resulted in the death of 4 people, including 2 civilians, according to the Army Spokesperson, Lul Ruai Koang.
In a video seen by media personnel, Pagan Amum condemned the shooting and called on the government to repeal articles 54 & 55 of the National Security Bill, which grants the National Security the right to arrest without a warrant. “For the Government to continue using the National Security Law to arrest citizens without charges and without a warrant of arrest. This is a violation of rights, including the rights of General Akol Koor,” Pagan Amum said.
Amum believes that General Akol Koor was the one behind the passing of the National Security Bill 2024, and that the law is now being used against him by the government.
“Even though General Akol Koor is the very person who was pushing for this law to be passed by the parliament, and he was there in the parliament. Now, this law has been used against him. We condemn the use of that law to violate his rights,” he added.
Pagan urged the government to issue a warrant of arrest and take Akol Koor to court if he has committed any crime. “If General Akol Koor has committed any crime to warrant his arrest, a warrant of arrest should be issued by a competent Court of law to arrest him. This is what we have been saying that please repeal this law and allow people to be free,” Amum said.
The Army Spokesperson, Lul Ruai Koang, confirmed in a press conference on Friday evening that General Akol Koor has been relocated from Thongpiny to his other house in Jebel Suk and is no longer under house detention.
