The government delegation at the Tumaini Initiative peace talks in Nairobi is expected to return to Juba in the coming days, to brief other members of the transitional government on the progress made so far in the discussions with the opposition hold-out groups and other stakeholders. The delegation met with President Salva Kiir in Nairobi yesterday and briefed him on the progress.
Government spokesperson, Michael Makuei says concerns and observations that were raised by some members of the government in Juba have all been addressed.
“All these reservations which came with us from Juba, we addressed them thoroughly together with all the stakeholders and all the opposition groups and they are all unanimous on the current provisions that we have,” said Minister Makuei, “So, we are sure that we have addressed all the concerns and there will be no way for us to talk again of any other observations, however, we are going to Juba and if any further observations come up, then we will consider them.”
Lual Dau, a representative of the opposition alliance – SSOMA – says there has been significant progress in the discussions.
“Tumaini Initiative has reached a serious milestone, we have concluded all the protocols except one protocol and from now I think we are ready to initial all these protocols and hopefully within a very short time, we will sign a comprehensive agreement that will address the issue of the constitution, issue of elections, issue of security issue, of reconciliation and peace among the people of South Sudan,” Dau said.
