President Salva Kiir Mayardit attended a gathering of regional dignitaries in Nairobi to grace Raila Odinga’s unveiling for the prestigious continental position during the February 2025 polls.
President Kiir pledged South Sudan’s support for Raila Odinga and urged the East African Community partners to back Kenyaβs bid for the top AU position as the bloc finds itself at a pivotal moment on the continental stage.
While unveiling Raila’s bid for the AUC, Kenyan President William Ruto highlighted that the assembly of leaders in Nairobi reflects the region’s strong solidarity towards the course of revitalizing Africa.
Raila Odinga outlined his vision to transform the AU into a more people-centered organization and to work with heads of state to enhance continental integration and advance Africaβs welfare.
Odinga will compete against Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Youssouf, Mauritius’s former Foreign Minister Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, and former Madagascar Prime Minister Richard James Randriamandrato.
This event marks the beginning of Odingaβs official campaign for the February 2025 election, seeking to replace the outgoing chair Moussa Faki Mahamat from Chad.
Railaβs road to the African Union Commission has gained momentum after the international and local leaders came out unreservedly to support his candidacy.
